The City of Unley has reversed a decision to move the date of a traditional Australia Day ceremony after councillors held a vote last year following a federal government memo.

Picture: Brendan Radke/ News Corp Australia “Unanimously, council agreed to ask a set of three questions … then the results did come back, because, you know, it’s an echo chamber, you have social media, and guess what, everybody tends to agree with you, so you think this survey is going to produce the results I want.”
“In local government, however, we’ve got a wide cross section of people who disagree on different issues, just like the community does and it is important for our democracy to sensibly and carefully disagree with each other and come to resolution.” Mr Hewitson told ABC Radio Adelaide there was “no stacking or ranting and raving” with making the decision on Monday, instead, the councillors’ debate was “deep and meaningful”.
