Yolanda De La Torre, a Wilmington resident and long-time community leader, has been appointed to the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners. This appointment fulfills a requirement outlined in Measure HH, ensuring representation from the Harbor Area on the board. De La Torre's experience with the YMCA and her deep understanding of the local community are expected to be valuable assets as the Port of Los Angeles navigates critical issues.

The Los Angeles City Council has unanimously approved the appointment of Wilmington resident Yolanda De La Torre to the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners. Her term commences on January 17th. De La Torre, nominated by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, brings the five-member board's local representation to two, fulfilling the requirement set forth in Measure HH. This measure, overwhelmingly approved by L.A.

City voters in the November 2024 election, mandates two Harbor Area residents — one from San Pedro and one from Wilmington — to serve on the commission. Other current members are Ed Renwick, Lucille Roybal-Allard, and John Pérez, all residing in central and west L.A. As port issues, encompassing development, air quality, traffic and labor matters, as well as environmental impacts, have ascended to the forefront of local voter concerns, De La Torre's appointment is seen as crucial. City Councilmember Tim McOsker emphasized the importance of having individuals who understand the lived experiences of those residing near the Port of Los Angeles during Wednesday's meeting. He stated that only those who live, work, or raise families in the vicinity can truly grasp the port's potential and the associated challenges.Mayor Bass underscored the need for a robust Port of Los Angeles to facilitate the movement of essential goods during the city's recovery efforts following a recent windstorm. De La Torre, a 50-year resident of San Pedro and an attorney, is well-known within her community. With nearly three decades of experience at the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles, she has served as the executive director for Wilmington since 1995 and more recently as the YMCA's district representative. This month, she will transition to the YMCA's Mission Advancement Team as vice president, supporting fundraising efforts for 28 YMCAs throughout Los Angeles County. De La Torre holds a Bachelor of Science degree in human services from Springfield College and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. She is actively involved with the Wilmington Rotary Club and has been recognized as Woman of the Year by the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce in both 2019 and 2021. De La Torre's first port meeting is tentatively scheduled for January 30th. She currently serves as the regional vice president of the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles and previously held the position of regional executive director for Wilmington and Gardena-Carson with the same organization from 2021 to 2023. Mayor Bass expressed confidence in De La Torre's ability to contribute to the Port's progress, citing her local roots and strong community relationships
