A water sample last week found the highest level of enterococci bacteria ever recorded at Willows Beach by CRD and Island Health
The District of Oak Bay is advising beachgoers to not go into the water at Willows Beach until further notice due to a record high level of bacteria found in a test of water taken from the beach’s south end on Aug. 14.
Testing by the Capital Regional District found an elevated enterococci bacteria count of 4,400 in the Willows Beach water sample. “My understanding is that if they didn’t fully dive into the water and didn’t suck in the water and swallow, they would be OK,” Mo said in a mixture of English and Cantonese. “But what kind of bacteria and what concentration, I have no idea.”
Maxine Leger, who had just arrived from Gatineau, Que. the night before, said she saw the swimming advisory sign but didn’t know that the recent sample test had been at over 20 times over the advisory threshold.
