Former Mayor Willie Brown spoke with The Examiner about the current race for mayor

But everyone in and around city politics knows that while Brown — who turned 90 this week — may no longer be the mayor, he will always be “Da Mayor.”

Why not? Because there was a deliberate effort made to cap what the CEO of The City could do. And that came from the progressives; that did not come from anybody else. They were not bad people, but they were theoreticians. They really believed that there was some way to gain perfection in a timely manner, I think, and that’s not possible.

But in the interest of trying to spread the responsibility and give people input, the progressives came up with the brilliant idea of having the f---ing Board of Supervisors approve the mayor’s appointees. And if you say you would vote for them — and except for ranked-choice voting, you wouldn’t have that option — you ought to get the f--- out of the race and help them, if you really are genuinely committed to making The City run better than the incumbent. Do you think Mayor Breed has been written off too early? All I hear about is her terrible approval ratings. Do not believe that. London Breed can beat either one of the guys already in the race. Neither one of them knows as much about government as she does. Not either one of them knows nothing about doorbell-ringing as she does. Not one of them, not one of them.
