A rare and dazzling site showered the skies earlier this week, including here in Pa.! We explore why they occur and what made them appear in more spots than usual.

The northern lights could make a stunning return to U.S. skies on Friday night. But, they may not be visible everywhere in the country. The northern lights could make a stunning return to U.S. skies on Friday night, giving stargazers another chance to spot the colorful nighttime display. Each eruption can contain billions of tons of solar plasma.

Our FOX43 Weather team says the northern lights will not be visible in our region of Pennsylvania, and likely, not across any part of the Commonwealth on Friday night and Saturday morning. It appears that if you want to see the auroras, your best bet is to travel north into a state like New York. The forecast shared by the SWPC shows that the auroras could appear in the northern part of the U.S. on Friday, May 31 into Saturday, June 1. This would include northern and upper Midwest states from New York to Idaho.

The northern lights should appear as a faint greenish glow which may appear to dance as it gets more active. Occasionally, other colors such as pink or red, will also be visible. A CME associated with the X1.4 flare, produced by Region 3697 earlier in the period, is likely to enhance the Earth's magnetic field late on 31 May into early on 01 Jun . Continue to monitor our web page for updates. The SWPC categorized Friday's possible storm as a G2 level, or moderate.

The flares seem to be associated with a sunspot that’s 16 times the diameter of Earth, NOAA said. It is all part of the solar activity ramping up as the sun approaches the peak of its 11-year cycle. The sun just shot out the biggest solar flare in nearly 20 years
