Glinda and Elphaba stand side by side in Wicked For Good
Universal Pictures and director Jon M. Chu split up their movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical into two movies, Wicked and Wicked: For Good. Both have now come out, bringing a sense of finality to the story of Elphaba and Glinda .
But is this truly the end, or could Wicked 3 happen? There has never been a continuation of the story as told in the musical, but Gregory Maguire's books, which inspired the stage show, do go beyond where Wicked: For Good ends. The conclusion doesn't directly set up Wicked 3, but it doesn't shut the door on it ever happening either. Here's what we know about if a third film will happen. Wicked 3 Has Not Been Officially Announced As of this writing, Wicked 3 is not officially in the works. Universal has not publicly signaled that a third film is happening by bringing writers or producers aboard to develop it. The studio has known since 2022 that a movie adaptation of the musical would need two parts to be done correctly. Despite having so much time developing the first two films, Universal and Chu have not put the cart before the horse by announcing a third film before audiences demanded it. So, even though Wicked 3 hasn't been confirmed, there is still a chance that another movie will happen. Universal already experienced the record-breaking box office run of Wicked, where it made $758 million worldwide. Box office projections for Wicked: For Good are even more promising. With the huge box office total this franchise will hold after two films, the studio will likely want to figure out ways to give audiences more films in this universe. If they can do so without it feeling like a cash grab, this sequel could come to fruition. Whether key creatives and actors would want to come back could also be a determining factor. What The Wicked Cast & Crew Have Said About Making Wicked 3 While the popularity of the Wicked musical has allowed countless performers to play these characters, this story now belongs to Erivo's Elphaba, Grande's Glinda, and Jonathan Bailey's Fiyero on a global, theatrical scale. Their returns, alongside Chu as the director and original lyricist/songwriter Stephen Schwartz, can make or break if audiences get behind a third movie. Among the cast members, Grande has provided the biggest tease that she'd be on board to return as Glinda for Wicked 3. During a Q&A in Wicked: For Good's promotional tour, the actress said, "I don't think anyone's going anywhere." When pressed if that was a confirmation about a third film happening, she said, "No, no, I don't know," before talking about the "peace" that's come with the second film's release. Her comment wasn't meant to tease Wicked 3, as she went on to clarify, "We're not saying goodbye to anything. These characters will be a part of our hearts always." But, with her also saying, "I will miss this particular work," there is a suggestion that Grande would be more than willing to come back for a third entry. Erivo and Bailey haven't commented on the chance of making one more movie. Pfannee actor Bowen Yang responded to Wicked 3's potential, definitively making his stance known, saying, "I think we leave it here." Intriguingly, Chu did not close the door on Wicked 3 happening, possibly even teasing that there are discussions already in the works: "What’s it about? You know, there’s a lot of ideas flying around right now... We’ll see. Let’s enjoy this ride first." The director has implied that any decisions about the threequel's status could wait until after the dust settles on Wicked: For Good's release. This would make sense, as it'd give Universal a chance to assess the film's box office in full, give the actors a bit of a break, and avoid all press for the movie revolving around what the next film could contain. What Wicked 3's Story Could Be Although there is more source material in Maguire's novels that Wicked 3 could adapt, a truly faithful adaptation to any single one would be very difficult. The musical changed the book in several key ways, and the movies stayed more true to the story as told in the Broadway phenomenon. Maguire's sequel book is Son of a Witch, which revolves around Liir, the son of Elphaba and Fiyero, as he navigates Oz in the years after his mother's death. It also features the return of Glinda, who is no longer the ruler of Oz, and Scarecrow, who is not Fiyero in the novel. Wicked: For Good's ending does allow a loose Son of a Witch adaptation to take place. Elphaba and Fiyero consummate their relationship in the sequel, so she could be pregnant with Liir at the conclusion. It'd be surprising for a third film to happen without Elphaba, so the movie would have the freedom to create a whole new story for her. In that vein, there's also a chance that Wicked 3's story could be something totally new. Chu could work with Schwartz to create the next chapter in a story that has never been told in the 20+ years since the original Broadway show premiered. Surely the original lyricist has some ideas for what happens to Elphaba and Glinda next. Thanks to how open ended Wicked: For Good is, there are many different paths Wicked 3's story could take. Figuring out which one is best will only be necessary, though, if Universal officially decides to move forward with another installment.
