The big date is set for Texas and Oklahoma’s move to the SEC — July 1, 2024 — but plenty of details need to be finalized before the Longhorns and Sooners can...
, although no movements have gained significant traction. Texas head football coach Steve Sarkisian, who is headed toward his third season, said in his opening press conference that he thinks renewing the rivalry would be “great for the state of Texas.”— just not football. Their fans trash talked every bit as much on message boards as they did when both were in the Big 12.
So Texas and Texas A&M will be back — sometime, probably in 2024, but it depends on the biggest decision remaining: the SEC’s new schedule format with 16 teams. Will the SEC go to nine games, with three permanent conference opponents and six rotating opponents from around the league? Or does it stay at eight nonconference games, which would mean just one permanent opponent and seven more conference games on a rotational basis?
If it’s three permanent opponents, Texas and A&M every year is almost a given, probably headed to its traditional home during Thanksgiving week for must-watch viewing. If it’s one permanent opponent, Texas and Oklahoma almost certainly will be paired because of the Red River Showdown. So no UT-A&M on a yearly basis.
