Terry Francona has taken a hands-off approach regarding the Guardinans' search for his replacement.
after hitting the walk-off homer against the Twins. If they could have recreated that Wednesday in Tito’s final home game, that would have been memorable.I’m pretty sure Francona’s head, neck and glasses would have protested that idea.
When a manager enters the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, does he get to pick the team he’s identified with? Does Terry Francona pick Boston or Cleveland? It’s usually a joint decision between the inductee and Cooperstown officials. Hall officials like to pick the team where the inductee “made his most indelible mark.” It’s a tough call with Francona. He won two World Series with the Red Sox and leaves Cleveland as its winningest manager. Could this be a tipping point -- the Red Sox fired Francona, but he left Cleveland as a hero. . .and on his own terms?Do players sent to the Arizona Fall League get extra pay? Or is it just part of the job?Players receive a salary, usually around $2,500 a month, and have their housing paid for when their teams send them to the AFL. Teams also provide their AFL players with meals.Has there been any discusion about Terry Francona having some continued role with the Guardians in the coming years?I’m sure there has been. Perhaps there will be an official announcement pertaining to that matter when Francona finally makes his decision official following the end of the season on Sunday. Right now I get the impression Francona just wants to step away from the game and take a deep breath. What are the two biggest things the Guardians need to fix over the winter in preparation for 2024? My first thought is the bullen, which collapsed in the second half. -- Carl, Las Vegas.Overall, the G’s bullpen numbers are respectable. The 34 blown saves are certainly a concern. The pen has struggled in the second half along with the rest of the team. The pen is 13-17 with a 4.61 ERA and 19 saves since the All-Star break. In September, they’re 5-7 with a 5.29 ERA and eight saves. I don’t think the bullpen needs a complete overhaul, but another high-velocity arm in the late innings would certainly help closer Emmanuel Clase. So would a healthy Trevor Stephan. I think a more pressing problem is the offense. They have to find a way to score more runs. It’s impossible for a team to win one-run games every night.
