San Diego State’s historic basketball season that culminated in the NCAA championship game Monday night is going to cost the university at least $255,000.
Steve Fisher, Dutcher’s predecessor, pushed a team-first ethos by repeating the mantra that “rising tides float all boats.” The assistants’ boats are floating higher than ever. “My assistant coaches are the same way. … They all feel like they’re contributing to the success. They all feel like. ‘I’m the reason we’re winning.’ I want them to feel that way. You don’t win unless you have good coaches and good players that believe they can get better.”
At the same time, the NCAA is changing rules about the size of basketball coaching staffs, allowing six instead of four to participate in on-floor instruction. Many programs plan to add positions or promote current staffers to more prominent roles. Other programs know that and increasingly inquire about his availability. Last year, San Jose State called. This year, multiple programs have, including, reportedly, Utah State for its current vacancy after Ryan Odom left for Virginia Commonwealth.
