This will allegedly be achieved by doing away with deputy positions.
The most bloated cabinet in South Africa’s history is reportedly set to shed 40 positions when President Cyril Ramaphosa announces his new cabinet of 32 ministers, down from 72 in Jacob Zuma’s., Ramaphosa will precede the announcement of his new team by outlining the new structure of his cabinet in a press briefing.
This weekend will be spent consulting his fellow ANC top six members as well as the party’s allies before any announcements are made. The number of ministers shot up significantly under the leadership of Zuma, who had 72 ministers and deputy ministers combined in his cabinet. His predecessor, Thabo Mbeki, had 50.
According to the publication, Ramaphosa will reportedly keep only 25 full ministers and do away with deputy positions, which have never really had much of a purpose aside from giving cadres of the ANC jobs.
