Ohio State quarterback Lincoln Kienholz is staying ready as the team's backup quarterback.

Every Saturday, he backs up starting quarterback Julian Sayin and is, for most of the game, a forgotten man. He lost the quarterback battle to him in August, and now, the third-year signal-caller’s job is to stay ready on the sideline just in case.

The Big Ten wants to be treated as a power. It shouldn’t be surprised to see Ohio State doing the sameOhio State has a player reuniting with a team that saved his football career, and it has an incredible backstoryKienholz, though, has to be ready whenever Ohio State might need him. Last year, backup quarterback Devin Brown entered games against Michigan State and Michigan -- and threw a touchdown pass in the former. Considering his skillset, it’s not out of the question to see Kienholz play in a Wildcat type of package with him as a more dual-threat quarterback than Sayin.“I don’t know right now,” Kienholz said. “I mean, potentially, but we’ll see.” The potential for him to enter the game, in any scenario, is one that he feels far more comfortable with than he did a year or two ago. His only prior game experience, before last Saturday, was in a disastrous Cotton Bowl loss where he entered for Brown, who was injured in the first half. Almost two years later, though, he got another shot. He went 6 of 7 passing for 71 yards with a touchdown pass against Grambling State, with 10 yards on the ground. “I made the most of it, went out there and did the best I could,” Kienholz said. “Just trying to put the team in the best spot to be able to score. Overall, I think I did well. I think there was one incompletion I could’ve made. But other than that, solid.” Entering as a reserve, considering he’s one year older than Sayin, certainly stung -- which Kienholz admitted in his first time talking to the media since the decision. Now, it’s about pushing Sayin both in the film room and on the practice field, so Kienholz can prove he deserves a chance to play. He’ll have to do that in non-game settings, though. “Our practices are harder than the games,” Kienholz said. “I was seeing things really well, everything’s kind of slowing down as well, because we go against the best defense in the country every day. I think honestly our practices prepared me for the game.” But, naturally, the way Sayin has started the season, it’s hard to see him coming off the field any time soon. Meaning that, for the time being, Sayin will have to do whatever he can to stay ready for his moment -- whether that’s in a specific goal-line or redzone package, or if he’s called upon to take over the reigns as the starting quarterback.
