Projected budget deficits need to be closed through higher ridership or alternative measures like higher fares

With projected deficits of over $300 million in the coming years, BART is exploring ways to its address financial challenges, including whether it should consolidate its services with other transit agencies and identifying alternate sources of revenue to stay afloat.

“Federal and state funds have been essential to helping Bay Area transit agencies maintain their operations,” said John Goodwin, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission's assistant director of communications. “The transit agencies, in turn, have taken big steps to adjust their services to meet new travel patterns.”
