Another batch of arctic air is headed in this weekend,
Alabama is expected to have high temperatures mostly in the 40s on Tuesday. Areas close to the coast may get to 50 degrees. One of the coldest mornings of the winter greeted Alabamians on Tuesday with temperatures in the teens across a large part of the state.
As of 6 a.m. Tuesday the winner for coldest spot surveyed by the National Weather Service was Fort Payne at 9 degrees. Temperatures had the potential to fall a bit more before “warming” begins later this morning. Here is a look at the coldest temperatures surveyed by the weather service from midnight until 6 a.m. Tuesday :The National Weather Service is forecasting the rest of the week to remain very cold -- even for January -- and another blast of arctic air is expected this weekend. In fact, temperatures on Friday night could rival those this morning, with single-digit lows possible, according to forecasters.Friday night into Saturday morning could bring temperatures close to the single digits in north Alabama and low 20s all the way into south Alabama.High temperatures today will be a few degrees higher than on Monday. Most of the state will get into the 40s for highs. North Alabama and most of central Alabama will have highs in the low to mid-40s. South Alabama will get anywhere from the mid-40s to around 50 degrees this afternoon. Here are tonight’s forecast low temperatures:Lows tonight will fall into the low 20s in north Alabama. Central Alabama lows will range from the low to mid-20s. South Alabama will bottom out in the mid- to upper 20s.Weather watchers continue to speculate about the possibility of yet another winter storm forming over the weekend.Nothing is certain yet, of course, but forecast models continue to show low chances of frozen precipitation for Alabama this weekend as a secondary shot of arctic air moves into the state. Another area of low pressure is anticipated to form in the Gulf by the weekend. However, it is expected to be far to the south this time, which would keep precipitation out of Alabama. The weather service will also be tracking another area of low pressure, this one a trough that would approach from the northwest on Friday. That system may not have enough moisture with it to squeeze out much in the way of winter precipitation, forecasters said. “Some form of winter weather still looks possible with this system, but the limiting factor remains the location of the low pressure,” the National Weather Service in Birmingham said in its Tuesday forecast discussion. “It looks like the main trough will work into the region overnight Friday, and given ambient temperatures, would allow for a very small period of freezing rain. With that being said, that window is small, and it’s entirely possible the progression is too fast. Meaning, the rain would move in when temperatures are above freezing.”Leigh Morgan is an Alabama native.
