Pumice rafts are formed when an underwater volcano erupts, releasing large chunks of lava that are full of holes and cavities, making it easy for the raft to float. They are often teeming with life, including new barnacles and corals, Scott Bryan, a professor of geology and geochemistry at Queensland University of Technology, told CNN.

Using Seattle as a case study, analysis by civil engineering postdoctoral researcher Corey Harper and professor Constatine Samaras at Carnegie Mellon University suggests that one of the biggest effects of automated vehicles may be on parking. That’s because AVs will leave their occupants in or near city centers but don’t have to park at more-expensive downtown parking spots, in favor of cheaper parking outside the center.
