Ashley Baker, a British man who lives in Mijas, told the BBC the fire appeared to be more threatening on Friday, but since then the wind had blown it away from his area. In a bid to tackle the fires, the area is being blanketed by a fire retardant substance dropped from planes. “It’s frightening … because you don’t know what’s happening,” said Belgian resident Jean-Marie Vandelanotte, 68.
Vincent Ferrier, a deputy fire service chief for Langon in Gironde, said: “We have a fire that will continue to spread as long as it is not stabilised.”
