Wildfires have burned millions of acres across the West. This is what that looks like.
Drought, high winds and excessive heat are only a few of the reasons why wildfires continue to sweep across Western states in 2020 – and why California has nearly half of all wildfire-ravaged acres in the U.S.. Thousands have been evacuated and hundreds of homes destroyed. More than 3.1 million acres have burned in California, where smoke particles are coloring the skies red and orange.
Oregon and Washington have been hit hard as well. About 900,000 acres have burned in Oregon, compared with 625,503 acres in Washington.has caused many of the California wildfires, and high temperatures and drought are helping the fires spread.'s population is affected by drought, according to drought.gov, and extreme heat caused rolling blackouts across state power grids last month. Heat warnings remained in effect for southern parts of the state this week.
