Wind gusts reaching 50 to 70 mph were recorded in Los Angeles on Tuesday, with the National Weather Service predicting strong north winds near the firefront through at least Wednesday. Winds are expected to peak between 35 to 60 mph between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday. Mandatory evacuations are in effect from north to Mulholland Drive, east to Kenter Avenue, and south to Pacific Coast Highway. The Westwood Recreation Center is serving as an emergency evacuation shelter for people and small animals. A large animal shelter is located at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank. Pacific Coast Highway is closed in multiple locations. All schools in Malibu will be closed Wednesday, while Santa Monica schools scheduled to remain open may close depending on the situation. The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District will make a final decision by 6 a.m. Wednesday. Parts of Santa Monica were under evacuation orders or warnings Tuesday night. Santa Monica College announced its Malibu campus would be closed Wednesday.
