Construction starts on wildfire prevention projects near Fairbanks, Alaska, enhancing safety for over 200 homes.
Construction has begun on a wildfire prevention project in the Haystack Mountain area, just north of Fairbanks . The Washington Creek project -- as well as a second nearby project called the Haystack Fuel Treatment project -- will enhance wildfire safety for over 200 homes in the area. That’s according to the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DOF).
The Washington Creek project will include a 300-foot wide clearing for about 12 miles north of Haystack Mountain in hopes of reducing fire intensity and giving firefighters more options to put out fast-moving wildfires. The projects are an extension of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan. It was completed in 2005 and was meant to assess high-risk fire areas in the Fairbanks North Star Borough in 2005. “It’ll lessen the impact of the fire coming in because there’ll be less fuel. And then it also gives our firefighters a safer place to be able to stand and put up the fight when the fire is coming in that direction.” Northern Region Fire Management Officer Rob Allen said. Allen also said it’s been beneficial to keep working on these kinds of projects during the winter, not only for fire protection but also for keeping seasonal workers employed. “After the passage of House Bill 209, it’s allowed us to be able to keep some of our firefighters on working later in the year, throughout the winter. We have people up there working on that project right now,” Allen said. “They would have been laid off now and off someplace else, and we have to bring them back on in the spring and retrain them back up. This way they stay employed.
