Despite challenging weather conditions, firefighters made progress containing the Palisades and Eaton wildfires. Cleanup efforts are underway in the burn scars, preparing for potential rainfall.

(Photo by Sarah Reingewirtz, Los Angeles Daily News/SCNG) Fire crews battled 35 to 50 mph gusts and continued low humidity over Wednesday night, according to Cal Fire officials. A red flag warning, signifying conditions conducive to the rapid spread of wildfires, was extended by the National Weather Service until 10 a.m. Friday, January 24.

However, a glimmer of hope emerged with the anticipation of at least some rain over the weekend, potentially starting on Saturday. The Palisades fire, which ignited on January 7, reached 75% containment by Thursday, January 23, as reported by Cal Fire officials. Meanwhile, the Eaton fire achieved 95% containment. Containment refers to the percentage of the fire's perimeter successfully blocked by natural barriers or firefighting efforts. The focus in both burn areas shifted towards debris cleanup, a crucial step ahead of the impending rainfall. In Altadena, the clean-up process has commenced, prioritizing the removal of hazardous household waste. The second phase will be undertaken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers should residents choose to participate in the free service. Residents who opt out can engage private vendors, but they must adhere to guidelines established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Tragically, the fires have claimed the lives of 28 individuals to date, with investigators still actively searching for a number of missing persons. Over 17,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed across the two fire zones, according to Cal Fire and the Angeles National Forest
