Devastating wildfires in Los Angeles County, including the Eaton and Palisades fires, have left behind burn scars that are highly susceptible to mudslides and debris flows. The Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works warns of the increased danger posed by the weakened landscapes and anticipates significant debris flows during rainfall events. The department is implementing plans to mitigate the risks and protect public safety.
Fierce winds and devastating wildfires have significantly altered the landscape in the burn areas affected by the Eaton and Palisades fires, dramatically increasing the risk of mudslides and debris flows, according to the director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. At a news conference on Thursday, DWP Director Mark Pestrella addressed concerns about a landslide that severely damaged a home in Pacific Palisades following the Palisades Fire .
'Both areas suffered substantial watershed damage to such a degree that we anticipate massive debris-laden flows when it rains,' Pestrella stated. He explained that while the existing flood control system is designed to manage debris flows, 'in the event of heavy rainfall, we anticipate that all areas will be impacted by debris flows that pose a hazard to public health.'Pestrella emphasized that the department is actively developing plans for both affected areas to capture and contain debris as much as possible during rainfall events. He further highlighted the challenges facing the Palisades, including slope instability, damaged gas lines, and compromised water lines resulting from the wildfire. Additionally, he noted the influx of water used during firefighting efforts, further exacerbating the situation.Pestrella stated that the DWP is collaborating with CalTrans to maintain the slopes of the burn areas, which have become incredibly fragile even in the absence of recent rainfall. The department is working diligently to mitigate the risks posed by potential mudslides and debris flows, striving to protect public safety and infrastructure in these vulnerable regions

Los Angeles County Pushes to Keep Troubled Juvenile Hall Open Despite State Closure OrderLos Angeles County supervisors have issued a declaration instructing attorneys and staff to fight a state order to close Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall. The declaration also calls for actions to address staffing shortages, cited as a root cause of the facility's problems. Originally, the order directed attorneys to prevent youth detainees from being released due to the closure, but it was amended to explore alternative detention options, such as community-based facilities or home release with monitoring, for those accused of non-violent offenses. Los Padrinos has faced numerous issues since reopening last year, including staffing shortages, allegations of violence, and escape attempts. The state has given the county a deadline of December 12th to correct these issues or face closure.
