The Wild Horse Fire ignited in Fishlake National Forest during Wednesday's storm. It was initially believed to have burned a couple of hundred acres, with estimates increasing into the thousands by Friday, according to Utah Fire Info officials. As of Friday afternoon, it is 25% contained, with fire officials expressing confidence that progress will be made over the next few days. Fire officials said mapping the fire has been challenging due to the terrain.
While updates make it appear as though the fire grew significantly between Thursday and Friday, officials said the jump in acreage is because they had initially underestimated the size of the fire. Officials said most of the fire's growth was on the day it ignited, and there has been minor growth along the perimeter since.
"There are still significant pockets of heat internally. Firefighters are utilizing helicopters to cool these areas," fire officials said.
