One theory explains Batman & Robin's campiness and goofiness by blaming the movie's different tone on The Riddler's actions in Batman Forever.
Although both movies were directed by Joel Schumacher and are part of the same continuity, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin are very different, especially when it comes to their tone, with the latter being a lot campier, and a theory blames this drastic change on The Riddler’s actions in Batman Forever. The Box was created by Edward Nygma while he was still working at Wayne Enterprises, and while it seemed harmless, fronting as 3D TV equipment, the Box also allowed Nygma to absorb the user’s brain waves into his own brain, making him smarter while also allowing him to read their minds. After being fired from Wayne Enterprises, Nygma became The Riddler and joined forces with Two-Face so he could develop more Boxes, in return for his help in finding out Batman’s identity.
