Police say Ellen and Jerry Gilland had a murder-suicide plan for weeks: If his unnamed illness worsened, the 76-year-old woman would fatally shoot her terminally ill, 77-year-old husband.

Gilland, a woman who police say had planned a suicide pact with her husband for weeks, fatally shot her terminally ill husband in a hospital, but then was taken into custody by police before she could shoot herself and is now charged with murder.
“Apparently the goal was for him to do it, but he didn’t have the strength so she had to carry it out,” Young said. Employees then began evacuating people from nearby rooms, according to the report. The police chief called it “a logistical nightmare" since most of the patients on the 11th floor were on ventilators.
