A year after the death of his teacher husband, Margo Jimenez continues to seek answers about the incident that led to his passing. She is advocating for change in the education system and pushing for increased resources for teachers working with students with cognitive disabilities.
A year has passed since Alfred Jimenez, a teacher at Northside ISD, suffered a fatal injury following an incident in his classroom. His widow, Margo Jimenez, continues to seek answers about what transpired that day, grappling with the loss and advocating for change within the education system.
On February 7, 2024, Jimenez, who worked as an instructional assistant in the Applied Learning Environment (ALE) classroom for students with cognitive disabilities, was pushed by a student, causing him to hit his head. The impact led to a series of medical complications that ultimately claimed his life. Margo Jimenez reflects on the anniversary, stating, 'It feels like it just happened. I still haven't gotten the closure I need.' She deeply misses her husband, whom she describes as 'a dream' and her 'soulmate.' Margo, who has endured significant personal challenges, including battling and surviving cancer in 2018 and losing her son in a car accident the following year, credits Alfred for being her rock during those difficult times.Margo remains determined to obtain clarity from Northside ISD and the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) regarding the circumstances surrounding her husband's injury. An incident report indicates that Alfred was pushed by a special needs student, but further details remain unclear. Margo expresses her desire for a complete account, asking, 'I wish somebody would tell me what happened. I don’t know if there were other teachers in the classroom or if he was by himself. I just don’t know.' She acknowledges the student's remorse, sharing that she was informed the child repeatedly apologized.Margo believes that the lack of resources within the classroom may have contributed to the tragic event and is now advocating for legislative changes to enhance the safety and support provided to teachers in similar environments. She states, 'It’s very hard. I just pray to God that I’m here long enough to help make some kind of change.' Northside ISD, in response to last year's incident, extended their condolences to Margo Jimenez, stating, 'This was a tragedy and we extend our sympathies to Mrs. Jimenez as she continues to grieve her loss.' The district, however, referred inquiries to SAPD. The San Antonio police department provided a report outlining the incident, stating that the student who pushed 'Mr. Fred' was attempting to grab another student's arm. When 'Mr. Fred' intervened to calm the situation, the student turned and pushed him. Despite this report, Margo is still seeking clarification on the number of students and teachers present in the classroom at the time. Both Northside ISD and SAPD have referred questions back to each other, leaving Margo without a complete picture. Margo Jimenez has announced plans to release balloons in honor of her late husband on Sunday at 5 p.m. at Bonnie Conner Park.
