High to very high fire danger still remains, although much of the state has seen some improvement.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Cooler, cloudier and wetter weather has been building into Alaska the last few days. The recent wave of rain that swept through the Interior lowered the fire danger there to moderate. While rain has been beneficial to the state, much of Southcentral still remains under high to very high fire danger . This trend towards wetter weather looks to remain into early next week.Outside of some spotty showers this morning, Southcentral will largely remain on the dry side Friday.
Some improvement in fire danger is already occurring, with Valdez-Copper River seeing burn permit suspensions lifted. The Matanuska-Susitna Valley and Anchorage remain under very high fire danger, with burn permit suspensions still in place for the valley.Fairly quiet weather will continue into the weekend, with just spotty showers in the forecast. Both today and tomorrow will remain in the low to mid 60s, with only the Southern Inner Channels seeing highs near 70.
A wind advisory is in effect for the White Mountains and high terrain south of the Yukon River until 10 p.m. Gusty southwesterly winds of 45 mph will lead to the potential for additional wildfire growth, although recent rain will certainly help prevent that. Starting tonight into your weekend, cooler weather looks to build into parts of the Slope. This will lead to locations from Wainwright to Utqiagvik seeing the potential for a rain-snow mix through the day tomorrow.
