No one mourns the wicked, but hold on to your broomsticks for “changes” coming in “Wicked: For Good.” The beloved musical film, “Wicked,” which is based on a book adaptation by Gregory Maguire that inspired the Broadway musical, returns in November with a second film highlighting Nessarose Thropp, aka the Wicked Witch of the East’s path to the dark side.
Actress Marissa Bode teases that the upcoming sequel won't completely stay true to the original storyline. “Yes and no. Yes, character-wise, and she just takes a turn. I will say that without saying too much,” Bode, 25, told our entertainment reporter Courtney Tezeno at the “The Wizard of Oz” at Sphere premiere in Las Vegas. “Also, I just think some things in terms of representation and how disability is represented is changed a little bit. And Nessa’s motivations definitely shift a little. Her greatest desires shift a little bit this film.” Nessa is the sweet girl in a wheelchair in part 1 and the baby sister of Elphaba, who falls in love with Boq when she goes to school at Shiz. How she gets her nickname, the Wicked Witch of the East, will be seen in part two after she marries Boq , making her the Governor of Munckinland. Since everyone knows she is Elphaba’s half-sister, who is on the run from The Wizard of Oz and Madame Morrible, she turns bitter and cruel. We only ever see Nessa in the original 1939 “Wizard of Oz” when Dorothy’s house lands on her and kills her. Glinda then gives Dorothy her magical ruby red slippers, which set off a literal “witch hunt” by The Wicked Witch of the West to retrieve them. Before her breakout role, Bode shared her first memories of the original movie growing up, and it’s a sweet coincidence. “Probably the ruby slippers,” she explained. “They were always something I loved. I had a pair when I was younger. Yeah. I mean, everyone's Dorothy one year, but I wore the shoes like regularly, just like outside of a costume, because I love them so much.” As for Bode’s friendship with her on-screen half-sister Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, the two aren’t as wicked in real life. “Cynthia is, of course, like an incredible talent and just a really kind human being,” she said. “One of our first times rehearsing, I met her tiny dogs for the first time. They were very cute. But, yeah, Cynthia is lovely.” Elphaba is painted as the Wicked Witch of the West for not working with the Wizard, doing evil in the Emerald City toward animals . It will be interesting to see if Nessa has a change of heart in the new film to take on Elphaba, who seeks refuge from her in the original versions.
