WI gun’s all-time knock stuns world No.1 Aussies for greatest EVER women’s T20 chase
The West Indies have pulled off the highest successful run chase in women’s T20I history, with a record-breaking knock from captain Hayley Matthews humbling Australia’s frazzled bowling attack at North Sydney Oval on Monday evening.
The 20-year-old, playing just her fourth T20I, smacked three boundaries and five sixes in a career-best performance, while Ellyse Perry top-scored for the Australians with 70 , her highest score in the format on home soil.Matthews won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that paid dividends when rival skipper Alyssa Healy departed for a golden duck, her first at international level since January 2016.
Perry and opener Beth Mooney combined for a 70-run partnership for the third wicket before the left-hander departed on the last ball before drinks, nailing a sweep shot against Matthews but picking out square leg for 29 . Wareham’s unbeaten 32 , which included six boundaries, was her best batting performance in T20Is, while Litchfield bettered the previous fastest half-century by an Australian in women’s T20Is by three deliveries.
It proved a costly error, with the West Indies proceeding to make a mockery of Australia’s world-class bowling attack, repeatedly thumping drivers through cover and point with ease.
