Wi-Fi 7 represents the next generation of wireless networking technology, delivering significant improvements in speed, latency, and capacity over its predecessors. Although the first routers supporting it began appearing on the market in 2023, this new generation of Wi-Fi officially launched for consumers in early 2024 when the Wi-Fi Alliance introduced the Wi-Fi Certified 7 program.
This certification program ensures interoperability between devices from different manufacturers and guarantees that certified products support the mandatory features of the Wi-Fi 7 standard. However, despite more than two years since the program's debut, the availability of Wi-Fi 7-compatible devices remains limited, which is not entirely unexpected for a nascent technology that offers performance far beyond what most households currently require. The limited adoption means consumers cannot assume that their existing or newly purchased gadgets support Wi-Fi 7.
For example, virtually any device released before January 2024, with the exception of select routers and a few other specialized products, lacks Wi-Fi 7 compatibility. Therefore, anyone considering purchasing a new Wi-Fi router should first assess whether they own or plan to acquire any Wi-Fi 7-enabled devices. To verify compatibility, users should consult the technical specifications provided by the manufacturer. Wi-Fi 7 is typically listed as Wi-Fi 7, Wi-Fi 802.11 be, or Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax/be in product documentation.
If such information is absent, contacting the manufacturer directly is advisable. Smartphone manufacturers were among the first to adopt Wi-Fi 7. Chinese brand Xiaomi announced its 13 Pro smartphone in December 2022, even before TP-Link's Archer BE900, widely regarded as the first commercially available Wi-Fi 7 router, reached store shelves. Other Android manufacturers quickly followed, and today Wi-Fi 7 is a staple in flagship phones.
For instance, all Apple iPhone 16 and 17 series models, except the iPhone 16e and 17e, incorporate Wi-Fi 7. Similarly, Samsung's Galaxy S25 and S26 lineups, excluding the FE variants, support the standard. The last three generations of Google Pixel and OnePlus flagship devices also feature Wi-Fi 7. The trend extends to tablets, with Apple, Samsung, and OnePlus including Wi-Fi 7 in their high-end and flagship tablet models.
In the laptop and desktop segment, manufacturers have kept pace, offering Wi-Fi 7 in high-end models powered by the latest processors, including Intel Core Ultra (Series 1 & 2), AMD Ryzen 9000/AI, and Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite/Plus (Gen 1 & 2) chips. Some premium gaming consoles have also embraced the technology. Despite its adoption in premium phones, tablets, computers, and gaming consoles, the broader electronics industry continues to rely on older wireless standards for many device categories.
Smart TVs, smartwatches, wearable devices, and streaming media players typically use Wi-Fi 6E or earlier versions. The same applies to wireless security cameras, various smart home appliances, and wireless printers. Several factors contribute to the limited rollout of Wi-Fi 7 beyond high-end products. Regulatory hurdles, particularly regarding the 6 GHz spectrum, pose a significant barrier.
While the United States has opened the 6 GHz band for unlicensed use, many regions in Europe, Asia, and Latin America have not, preventing those areas from exploiting key Wi-Fi 7 capabilities that depend on this spectrum. Additionally, average home internet speeds globally hover around 300 Mbps, far below the multi-gigabit throughput that Wi-Fi 7 hardware is designed to handle, making the technology overkill for most consumers.
Many IoT devices transmit only small amounts of data and do not require the massive bandwidth that Wi-Fi 7 provides, so manufacturers see little justification for switching to more expensive Wi-Fi 7 chips. Higher patent licensing costs for Standard Essential Patents (SEPs), owed to companies like Huawei, Intel, and Qualcomm, further discourage integration into affordable devices.
Consequently, Wi-Fi 7 is likely to remain confined to the high-end segment for the foreseeable future, especially amid rising component costs driven by the AI boom. However, as production volumes increase and component prices decline, and as home internet speeds continue to rise, Wi-Fi 7 is expected to gradually appear in more mid-range and budget-friendly hardware
