The most stunning people in this country right now are those who use their strength and grit to create, to challenge, to say no, to embrace yes. For our July issue, we spoke to journalists, athletes, actors, and political activists about the beauty of seizing, and boldly acting on, our power.
One of the best things about being blind is that I feel just as confident without makeup as I do with it. My confidence comes from inside, from who I know I am. Makeup to me is fun! I grew up being very creative, but I lost the ability to express myself through drawing. [ Editor’s note: Molly was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at age four and lost her sight almost completely by age 14. Today she can see a bit of light and shadow. And sometimes glitter.
] This is an art I can do on my face every day. I can feel it on my skin. It’s accessible to me that way. A lot of people comment on my stuff and are like, I wish I had the confidence to rock that hair color, or the clothes you wear. And I’m like, you can! Even me — there are times when I’m like, is this going to be too bold? But I’m like, let’s just do it. You just own it. And it’s a little like that with blindness — people are like, ‘Oh, my God, if I went blind, I wouldn’t be able to function. I don’t know how she does it.
