'Let your conscience be your guide... be brave, be courageous, be bold, and use what you have.' — John Lewis
at the hands of bigoted law enforcement and citizens, how did you remain so resolute in your nonviolent advocacy? When I was growing up, my mother and my father and my grandparents would tell us, "Don't get in trouble! That's the way it is!" — but I didn't like that way, so I had to do something about it. So through the sit-ins, the freedom rides, the marches, I got arrested 40 times during the '60s and have been arrested five times since I've been in congress.
At an early age, I heard the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I first heard of Dr. King when I was 15 years old. I heard of Rosa Parks the same time and met Rosa Parks at the age of 17; at the age of 18, I met Dr. King. I started to study the way of peace, the way of love, studying the philosophy and the discipline of nonviolence, studying the role of civil disobedience, studying the teaching of Gandhi.
Just refer back to this weekend [of the Women's Marches] here in America and around the world. The people are very, very creative with some of their posters and the signs that they made. It's amazing to me how people can come together in a much more sophisticated way today than we were in the late '50s and early '60s.as a guide. As a road map to help take us to where we want to go in our society.
