Clay Holmes recently endured his worst stretch with the Yankees. Here's why the team never lost faith that the closer would recapture his dominance.
Boone reiterated on Wednesday that even as Holmes allowed at least one run in five of his six outings in mid-to-late August — including the five-run outburst and walk-off loss in Miami — he was more a victim of “wonkiness” than anything else.
Holmes understands that his failures will always be in the spotlight more than his dominance. His job is to shut other teams down when the game is on the line. Recording saves and racking up clean innings is what he’s employed to do. That’s why his best streaks don’t get as much fanfare. It’s the nature of being a reliever in this business.
“There’s gotta be a process underneath that keeps you afloat, because if not, it’s easy to drown in those ups and downs, the wins and losses,” Holmes added. “You get so wrapped up in the result, you lose your way a little bit. I think the whole process and thinking that keeps you near the surface and buoyant, you don’t get lost in the downs and the ups don’t change who you are necessarily. You don’t think you’re somebody that you’re not. Part of maturity is learning what your process is.
