With millions of articles, Wikipedia is a hub for many things, and that includes regional WA. Meet the dedicated WA hobbyists who commit their time to the free online encyclopedia.
With 55 million articles in 309 languages, and almost 7 million alone in English, Wikipedia has become a hub of information on practically anything you can think of.
"I came home and did a search to find out stuff about it, and there was not much really, there was no article on Wikipedia," he said.Mr Hughes has contributed 4,679 articles to the online encyclopedia, and his username can be seen in the edit histories of national parks, Albany's heritage sites, and local plant species.
Maintaining this neutrality was important for Wikipedia's role documenting the overlooked and unknown topics of the regions."Having a reliable source of information for free for everyone is important. Not everyone has access to a library."Like Mr Hughes, Fremantle user and former Wikimedia Australia president Gideon Digby's story began with a topic he could not find information about on the internet.
Curtin University internet studies professor Tama Leaver said it was a database that had let volunteers give many overlooked topics attention.The risk of bias from Wikipedia editors has been subject to much scrutiny, but Professor Leaver said the consensus from researchers was that the system worked.
