DoctorStrange star Elizabeth Olsen explains why Scarlet Witch doesn't go looking for a certain someone in MultiverseOfMadness, instead focusing on other people. Spoilers ahead!
Elizabeth Olsen reveals why Wanda Maximoff doesn't search for Vision in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Directed by Marvel veteran Sam Raimi, the long-awaited Doctor Strange sequel finally arrived in theaters on May 6th. Set shortly after the events of WandaVision, the film sees Olsen's Wanda going up against Doctor Strange as the sorcerer tries to defend multiversal traveler America Chavez from the wrath of the Scarlet Witch.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness marks the first time viewers have seen Wanda since the end of WandaVision, in which she trapped the entire town of Westview in an idyllic sitcom world while grieving the loss of her husband, Vision. By the end of the series, Wanda is forced to sacrifice both Vision and her two sons, Billy and Tommy, for the greater good.
“There's a whole list of things, like my brother, my parents. I think the main reason when we would talk about if there is this multiverse, and in the version of the universe this woman wasn't with Vision. We liked having that be a mystery. For some reason he's not in her world. I always thought of her as more of a domestic Wanda. They got divorced. They're separated. She's not wearing a wedding band for a reason. Like those kinds of things.
Considering her past, it makes sense that Vision isn’t the only person central to the myth of the Scarlet Witch. Throughout the new film, Wanda explains multiple times that Billy and Tommy are the “most important thing” in the world to her, and that she's first and foremost, a mother. While Wanda's fierce determination to find her children might seem admirable, it isn't always pretty, and often times comes at the expense of other people's lives—in very violent, gory ways.
It'll be interesting to see where Scarlet Witch's story will go from here, and if Vision might possibly appear in future MCU projects. Regardless, Wanda manages to serve as an incredibly convincing villain in the new Doctor Strange movie, with audiences now aware of just how far Wanda will go to be reunited with her family.
