Here's why the Vikings must diversify their offensive attack in order to make a deep playoff run. SKOL
the NFL, for the Vikings and head coach Kevin O’Connell to reach their ceiling this season, diversifying the offense and expanding the playbook remains paramount. Take last week’s 34-23 loss to the Detroit Lions for example.
On an afternoon that saw Jefferson haul in 223 of Kirk Cousins’ 425 passing yards, a gaudy 20.3 yards per catch remained all for naught with zero trips to paydirt. They were empty numbers, and with no other wide receiver recording more than 65 yards through the air, Minnesota had a tougher time executing when they worked into the red zone. The Vikings have looked one-dimensional within an offense littered with playmakers.
As bodies creep, the play-action game—where Cousins is best—begins to shine. On 148 attempts, the veteran signal-caller has tossed nine touchdowns compared to three interceptions, has just four turnover-worthy plays, and an 83.4% adjusted completion percentage. In layman’s terms, he’s fantastic when granted the opportunity to carry out a run fake, flip his head downfield, and pump throws to the intermediate portions of the offense.
But none of it is possible unless Cook is fed early and the front five is able to create even a sliver of space to slip through. It’s a recipe for success moving into the last month of the season and into a conference championship race the Vikings have found themselves in. The trio of O’Connell, Cousins, and Jefferson will continue to spearhead the spotlight of the Vikings’ offensive attack. But as they face better defensive units, and Minnesota is forced into the elements of playoff football in the frozen chill of winter, further involving the ground game, and, in turn, diversifying the ways in which they put points on the board could hold the key to a deep postseason run for the Vikings.
