Let’s start off the new year with a big batch of complaining!
It’s 2025. Can you believe it? It’s been a full quarter of a century since we celebrated New Year’s Eve by hoping the computers didn’t all give up and the world didn’t end on Y2K.
I figured I would start out the new year in the humblest way possible: By sharing your mostly negative feedback on a column I wrote in the waning moments of 2024.. Even though I braced for a reaction to my answer, I was somewhat surprised by the emails I got. Here is a selection, edited for length and grammar.RE: “Boomer.” Completely irrelevant to the situation. And if you want to eliminate hate speech, I suggest you stop labeling people by age, race and privilege status.
I agree with you that in the moment is the best, but barring that if one and only one person in the office is doing something inappropriate a company-wide email chiding anyone who might be doing it is the least effective course of action, worse than doing nothing, in my opinion.Because of course lots of Boomers don’t use slurs and of course, lots of non-Boomers do use slurs.
But I thrive on disagreement! Send me all your angriest takes on what I write. Send me your positive ones, too! I read them all. Lastly, one piece of unsolicited advice as we head into 2025, that I think can apply to absolutely anyone who is capable of writing: Get a five-year journal and jot down a couple sentences in it every night. Basically, a five-year journal has a page for every day of the year, with five entries per page. So when I write tonight about today, I can see what I wrote on this day in 2024 and 2023.
