Looks can be deceiving, especially in the animal kingdom. You might be tempted to pick up the attractive but equally venomous blue-ringed octopus while giving the relatively harmlessa wide berth. For the aye-aye, an intriguing lemur from Madagascar, its glaring features have made it the unwitting target of fear from the local population.is the world’s largest nocturnal primate .
Once it has its target in range, the aye-aye uses its long, powerful teeth to quickly carve a hole in the trunk. It then slips its finger into the tree through the cavity and hooks onto the grub before pulling it out for consumption. The aye-aye uses the same middle fingers to scoop the flesh out from coconuts and other fruits of choice.
One such belief suggests the aye-aye sports a “finger of death”—anyone the lemur points at will be greeted instantly by their own mortality. Another—perhaps more twisted—belief suggests the aye-aye enters homes at night and uses its middle digit to claw out the hearts of anyone it finds. Local beliefs vary by region, but the one thing they all have in common is the antidote—kill them on sight.
