Why do we “spring forward” and “fall back” with our clocks each year? Daylight Saving Time was a way to save fuel and make the most of sunlight during World War I, but it has stuck around.

It’s almost time for clocks to “fall back” one hour. On the first Sunday of November, at 2 a.m., clocks will need to be set an hour back to standard time, marking an end to Daylight Saving Time. On the second Sunday of March, at 2 a.m., clocks in most of the United States and many other countries “spring forward” one hour and stay there for nearly eight months as part of Daylight Saving Time.

The twice-yearly switcheroo is irritating enough to lawmakers of all political stripes that the US Senate passed legislation in March 2022 to make Daylight Saving Time permanent. However, House lawmakers failed to vote on the bill in 2022. The Sunshine Protection Act of 2023 was reintroduced in the Senate earlier this year along with companion legislation in the House, but passage is not expected anytime soon.
