TheLastOfUs just had to be a TV show, says original game creator Neil Druckmann 👀 'The short answer is that the story is too long. We tried to make it into a movie, and it did not work... This time around it allowed us to take our time...' 😯

The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann discusses why the video game adaptation was better suited to a television series than a movie. Set to debut on HBO this month, The Last of Us will adapt the first installment in the beloved video game franchise of the same name. Created by Naughty Dog, The Last of Us tells the story of Joel and Ellie, who travel across a post-apocalyptic America in the hope that Ellie's natural immunity to the horrifying Cordyceps virus can help save the world.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY As audiences prepare for The Last of Us to finally land on screens, Druckmann, the game's creator and series' co-showrunner, discusses how the adaptation was initially tried as a movie. Speaking to Variety at the recent premiere of The Last of Us, Druckmann shares how they quickly realized that The Last of Us fit better as TV, which could better do justice to the game's scope.

The short answer is that the story is too long. We tried to make it into a movie, and it did not work because what is usually a 15-hour experience and compressing it down into two hours, it didn’t work and there is always something else that is popping out I felt was important to the story. This time around it allowed us to take our time and have a slow burn with the relationship between Joel and Ellie, over a year-long journey that could have only been adapted into a TV show.

The Last of Us' nine-episode run will allow audiences to fully immerse themselves into Joel and Ellie's world by not rushing any of the major story and visual elements that helped lift the game to major success. The most recent The Last of Us trailer offered some long-awaited glimpses at what's to come, exciting many by confirming the HBO series will be packed full of game-accurate moments.

Druckmann's comments only highlight his passion for The Last of Us and serve as confirmation that his main focus was getting this adaptation right. Hollywood's back-catalog of video game adaptations is most certainly a mixed bag, something that had many The Last of Us fans nervous during the HBO adaptation's infancy, though this has since proved unwarranted.
