European lawmakers this week renewed appeals for tech giants to use a universal charger for all the mobile devices and gadgets sold within the trading bloc . The European Parliament hasn’t scheduled a vote on the matter, but Apple has already hit back with claims that it wouldIf the proposal passes the European Parliament then Apple could be forced to change its iPhone cable, for the second time since it dropped the 30-pin dock connector in 2012.

It’s not just about convenience for consumers: According to European Commission estimates, obsolete cables generate more than 51,000 tons of waste per year. Apple has already ditched the Lightning cable on their 2019 iPads for a USB-C; it’s a likely option if the company is ever forced to abandon the Lightning connector altogether. “We are drowning in an ocean of electronic waste,” said Roza Thun, a Polish European Parliament member. “Demand grows and with it waste and exploitation of natural resources.”: For the past ten years, the European Commission has pressed tech companies for a single charging method.
