Walker has battled his way back to being a starter in the Browns defense despite suffering a season-ending injury a year ago.

“I think it speaks for itself that he’s one of our captains,” defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said. “I mean, he wasn’t part of the whole most of the season last year, wasn’t part of most of the offseason program, sporadic in training camp. But he found a way to make his presence felt. He’s an experienced player. He’s super smart, understands situations. He’s a really good communicator, makes life easy for the other guys around him.

Special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone overlapped with Walker from 2017-20 at the last stop for each of them, with the Colts, and has always appreciated that about the linebacker. On Monday night against Pittsburgh, Walker and his teammates won’t be able to let the emotions get the best of them on the road in primetime in a tough division rivalry game. Walker and the defense are also coming off a stellar performance in which they held the Bengals to 142 yards of offense, but they can’t get too high after a good debut performance.

“You just play ball,” Walker said. “I think at the end of the day you can go out and make it more than what it is, but at the end of the day you go out there and you play the football game that you’ve been playing all your life. That would be my message to all the guys, you’ve been playing this game. We’ve played in big games before. This is nothing different, just bigger stage and a little bit more TV time.
