The light installation on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge went dark on Sunday, its 10th anniversary.

"The Bay Lights," the light installation on the Bay Bridge's western span, shut off on Sunday, its 10th anniversary.,” the installation made of thousands of LED lights that sparkle in moving patterns on the western span of the Bay Bridge, shut off Sunday.

The public art nonprofit Illuminate, which developed and actualized “The Bay Lights” in 2013, announced plans earlier this year to shut the installation off on March 5, its 10th anniversary. The technology used to maintain it — an electronic system of 25,000 LED lights that uses a randomized algorithm to display moving patterns — is failing faster than it can be maintained, Illuminate founder Ben Davis previously told SFGATE.

The nonprofit hopes to raise $11 million to improve the installation’s technology and have the lights back up and running by September, this time with twice the number of LEDs, newly manufactured by Iowa-based lighting firm Musco Lighting. “I can just tell there’s no way this region will let this go dark without really trying to step up,” Davis said.

As of January, Illuminate had secured $1 million from WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg. The nonprofit will announce an update on fundraising efforts soon.
