With its powerhouse kickoff and promising staying power, 'The Batman' signals a much-needed turning point for Warner Bros.

both ”The Flash” and its ”Aquaman” sequel from this year to 2023 dates last week, while a ”Shazam!” sequel was moved up from 2023 to occupy the vacant December slot left by ”Aquaman.”

As far as superhero tentpoles go, the 2022 Warners slate is still a step up from 2021, in which the only DC-adjacent film was R-rated “The Suicide Squad.” That film was hurt heavily by the rise of the delta variant amid its August release and the ability to stream the film on HBO Max, so the delaying of two films tied to members of the DCEU’s Justice League is a blow to the 2022 slate given how well “The Batman” is performing.

That said, Dwayne Johnson-led “Black Adam” is still set for this year’s slate but will now release in October instead of July, and another “Fantastic Beasts” film should lift Warners’ theatrical revenue back up once “The Batman” begins streaming on HBO Max upon the end of its cinema exclusivity. The Caped Crusader alone has already lifted Warner Bros. from the bottom of the list when it comes to cumulative 2022 box office gross to second place after Sony, so things are at least looking up for the film studio just before a new era of restructuring begins under the
