A Bay Bridge toll booth lane has been closed since a tragic crash in 2017, and there are no plans to reopen it, according to Caltrans.
There’s a phantom tollbooth on the Bay Bridge, and Caltrans has no intention of reopening it. Lane 14 has been closed to drivers for years, forcing Bay Area commuters to careen around the plugged roadway. Sometimes their ire grows as they bottleneck to pay their $7 toll. “Why can’t they open this lane?” wrote a Reddit user on Nov. 3. “Whenever there is traffic everybody ends up needing to merge around this one stupid closed lane.
He added that there has been no toll equipment in the lane since the crash, and that the Bay Area Toll Authority and Caltrans decided to keep the lane closed after determining it didn’t have a major effect on traffic. “Traffic usually moves to adjacent lanes, which are underutilized because of metering lights,” he said. But the principal reason why Lane 14 won’t reopen is due to an upcoming project to remove toll booth structures from most bridges in the Bay Area.
