“If you think about where we were 18 months ago, and where we are today, it’s dramatically different,” Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark said.When TCU plays defending champion Georgia in Monday’s CFP championship at SoFi Stadium, it’s as much a boon for the Fort Worth private school as it is for the Big 12.The Horned Frogs have waited 84 years, since the days of Heisman Trophy winner Davey O’Brien, for another shot at a national title.
It also comes at a time when UT and OU endured mediocre seasons. The addition of Houston, Cincinnati, UCF and BYU, along with recent success by TCU, Baylor, Kansas State and even Oklahoma State, offers the argument that the Big 12 could be as strong as ever from top-to-bottom. With the 12-team playoff expansion set for the 2024 season, the Big 12 will be guaranteed at least one spot every year .
“And it's probably the best that the Big 12 has been in a long time. And the two brand name institutions really weren't as good as they typically are. I think it speaks to the strength of the league, the overall strength. I think it speaks to the momentum that the Big 12 has. I think the future for the Big 12 is very bright.”
