Spring Branch ISD leaders say that the proposed state budget for education would force painful cuts to schools.It’s boom times over in Spring Branch ISD. There, in the school district on the west side of Houston, test scores have gone up, even during the pandemic, property values soared, bringing in record tax revenue and spending per student has increased for most of the last five years.
Huffman and Bettencourt are right that the education budget increases the state's share of funding while compressing local taxes and"fully funds the School Foundation Program," but this makes no difference in how many dollars a district has to spend. The state budget makes some targeted new investments, but school districts across Texas — not just Spring Branch — are indeed staring at deficits and painful cuts.
