Top-notch plant-based eateries have shuttered, but others have opened

‘This one really hurts.” That was how one popular Instagram account dedicated to veganism responded to the news that BAIA, a swanky Italian eatery in Hayes Valley beloved by plant-based eaters, was shuttering in March.

Proprietors of vegan establishments said that vegan cuisine is perfectly viable, and they are facing mostly the same pain felt by everyone else in the industry. It’s simply not easy to run a restaurant in 2024, be it a steakhouse serving up a 16-ounce ribeye or a vegan cafe with a panoply of nut butters for every smoothie.

Nourish Cafe closed its cafe on the corner of 6th Avenue and California Street earlier this year but continues to operate from its second location, a larger space in Nob Hill. The reasons for the closure were myriad, but customers scoffing at vegan food wasn’t one of them, according to Bacon. In fact, many — if not most — of the restaurant’s patrons don’t adhere to strict plant-based diets.

SFPUC bolsters case for new public utility with promise of rate relief Energy experts say it’s still too early to tell how much an exit from PG&E could save local customers, given the deep uncertainty around such a transition The story documented “60 former employees, jilted investors, and frustrated business associates who told The New York Times of a 30-year pattern of chaotic and reckless management by Mr. Kenney.”

“So many factors are killing small independent businesses — from local policies, ghost kitchens and delivery apps to sky-high rents and the ongoing COVID pandemic that changed people’s eating and spending habits and drove many catering or in-person customers out of state as their employers shut down or transitioned to working-from-home models,” Chia said.
