Shia LaBeouf was actually the most ideal casting choice to play Indiana Jones’ son in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, due to his personality.
Perhaps an underrated film in the Indiana Jones franchise, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’s Mutt, portrayed by Shia LaBeouf, was actually an ingenious casting move. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is generally considered the black sheep of the Indiana Jones series to date, and this is partly due to Shia LaBeouf being cast as Indy’s son. But, although Shia LaBeouf's Mutt isn't in Dial of Destiny, he was more suited to the role than audiences think.
As shown in the opening sequence of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Indiana Jones is resourceful and intelligent, a trait demonstrated in his using a lead-lined refrigerator to survive an atomic bomb test in the desert. Mutt, Indiana Jones’ son, is introduced on his motorcycle, and later finds himself embroiled in a fight in a diner. The dramatic contrast between the two personalities allows Indy to impart some of his wisdom and maturity to Mutt, helping his son become a man.
