will be looking for their franchise quarterback during the 2025 offseason. With the No. 2 overall pick, they may consider one of the two most highly regarded quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft: Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Miami’s Cam Ward.
Ward has elite arm talent, with an incredible whip-like release that allows him to throw off multiple platforms, in and out of the pocket, from both a set position or on the run. He throws with tremendous accuracy and velocity, especially on the 15- to 20-yard chunk plays that make any offense explosive.That incredible arm talent can often get him into to trouble, leading to poor lower-body fundamentals, which leads to inaccurate throws, especially those that require total body torque.
Ward’s skillset is similar to Deshaun Watson’s during his incredible 2020 season in Houston. Though Watson has struggled in his time in Cleveland, his success during that 2020 season earned him a huge contract with the Browns. For me, however, being Deion’s son is less important than having former NFL coach Shurmur as his coach.
These types of concepts from Shurmur will translate to the NFL and help shorten the learning curve for Sanders as he enters the league. Improving pocket awareness and decision-making — such as stepping up when needed or throwing the ball away — can significantly reduce mistakes and improve a quarterback’s performance at the NFL level.
