Jeremy Allen White, star of The Bear, opens up about acting on a long-running series like Shameless, which ran eleven seasons. 'There was a period where I stopped feeling like an actor, and I started feeling like I was just here to do this show.'

Jeremy Allen White opens up about how Shameless stopped making him feel like an actor. Shameless is an American interpretation of a British series with the same name. The series kicked off a prolific eleven-season run, beginning in 2011 and ending in 2021. Shameless stars William H. Macy, Emmy Rossum, Ethan Cutkosky, Shanola Hampton, Steve Howey, Emma Kenney, Cameron Monaghan, and White.

The series follows the Gallagher family and their close friends as they navigate social woes in Chicago like poverty and substance abuse. Shameless had a unique style of heavy drama mixed with hilarious situations.

"I love Shameless so much. I love everybody that was a part of it, and the experience was incredible, but I'm not sure if shows are meant to go that long. There was a period where I stopped feeling like an actor and I started feeling like I was just here to do this show. It was an upsetting head space to be in. When it was going to end, I was questioning: Maybe I do just exist on this show.

White is not the only actor to feel overwhelmed from working on a particular project for so long. For example, Sophia Bush left Chicago P.D. after season 4, saying she felt ignored, or Mark Harmon, who admirably starred in NCIS for 18 years before calling it quits. Even some of White's Shameless costars left before the series was over, with Emmy Rossum leaving at the end of Shameless season 9 and Cameron Monaghan departing in 2108, though he did return after some time away.

Despite dedicating so much time to Shameless, White still worked on other projects over the years, like the romantic dramedy After Everything and the 2020 horror film The Rental. White's first big project since the Shameless finale is FX on Hulu's The Bear, which sees him playing Carmen 'Carmy' Berzatto, a fine-dining chef who returns to Chicago to run his families sandwich shop.
