And just like our histories, people are still silently watching it all happen. THIS IS GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING.” In another post, she stated: “Western media only shows the side. Why do they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself.” Shortly after these posts circulated publicly, Barrera was removed from the film. A spokesperson for Spyglass Media Group, the company behind the Scream franchise, issued a statement clarifying its position: “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.” The studio’s statement framed the decision as aligned with its policies regarding hate speech and antisemitism. Barrera later responded publicly, maintaining that she condemns antisemitism and Islamophobia and that her comments were intended as advocacy for Palestinian civilians. However, the studio did not reverse its decision, and production plans moved forward without her involvement. How Melissa Barrera's Scream 7 Firing Impacts The Franchise From a storytelling perspective, Barrera’s removal leaves several narrative threads unresolved. Across Scream and Scream VI, Sam Carpenter was established as the daughter of Billy Loomis, the original Ghostface killer from Scream. Her struggle with her father’s legacy became the emotional backbone of the reboot era. Further, Scream VI positioned Sam and Tara as the franchise’s new central protagonists. It relocated them to New York City and explored their attempt to build new lives after surviving Woodsboro. Sam’s relationship with Danny, introduced as a potential suspect before being revealed as an ally, was another ongoing subplot left open-ended. Sam’s internal conflict over her murderous potential and the public scrutiny she faced were clearly designed as multi-film arcs. Without Sam and Tara, those threads will either need to be written out, recontextualized, or ignored in Scream 7. In response, the franchise now appears to be leaning more heavily on returning legacy cast members. Meanwhile, in the real world, Barrera’s firing prompted calls for a boycott of Scream 7 from some pro-Palestinian supporters and fans of the actress. Scream 7 is tracking for a purported record-breaking opening as the second-highest in the franchise’s history – a performance likely bolstered by the return of original cast members . Regardless, Barrera’s firing has already reshaped Scream 7 creatively and commercially, marking a major turning point in the franchise.
